Tropical Storm Marco weakens as Laura gains strength.
Tropical Storm Marco briefly grew to hurricane strength Sunday before weakening again, but it is still one of two powerful storms heading toward the Gulf Coast. Landfall for Marco is expected late Monday in Louisiana where a hurricane warning is still in effect.
Tropical Storm Laura is expected to reach hurricane status before it heads into Louisiana late Wednesday.
The back-to-back storms are unprecedented. The National Weather Service said such a confluence of storms hasn’t happened in the Gulf of Mexico in recorded history.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said, “We have a very unique situation with two storms that unfortunately are headed to Louisiana. They post a challenge we have quite frankly not seen before. He said the “one-two punch” of hurricanes will blanket the state’s coastline with storm surge as high as 10 feet in some areas and prompt flash flooding in others.
The impact of the two storms is expected to be felt along the Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida panhandle coastlines with storm surge, heavy rainfall and strong winds. Some areas are expected to see 15 inches of rain from the two storms.
